--------------------------------------------------------------
Sample letter:
Dear... We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the deterioration of the human rights situation in Iran and the flagrant violations that are currently taking place. As such, we call upon the government of Canada to condemn the state of human rights in Iran during the upcoming Universal Periodic Review of Iran by the United Nations Human Rights Council on February 15, 2010 and demand that the Iranian leaders responsible for the widespread and systematic violation of human rights and crimes against humanity, including murder, torture, rape, unlawful detention, and persecution on political and religious grounds, should be brought before the International Criminal Court by a referral of the UN Security Council. Iran has long been criticized by international human rights bodies and organizations for its persistent and extensive flouting of its human rights obligations under ICCPR and ICESCR. Freedom of expression, communication, association, and of the press is highly curtailed. Women's rights activists, journalists, trade unionists, intellectuals, students, sexual minorities, religious and ethnic minorities, and human rights activists are routinely subject to harassment, discrimination, persecution, arbitrary arrest, detention and torture. Ill-treatment, the torture and rape of prisoners to obtain confessions is widespread. The death penalty is frequently applied, including for juveniles. These serious human rights violations combined create an atmosphere of fear prejudicial to the development of civil society. The situation in Iran has reached a critical point of human suffering and destruction since the disputed June 12 presidential elections of 2009. The spontaneous protests denouncing the official result of the election have been violently repressed. Hundreds of unarmed civilians protesting in the streets have been killed, and thousands more have been arbitrarily arrested such as: reformers, students, journalists and human rights defenders. Dozens of political opponents have been unfairly tried before Iran’s Revolutionary Court. This is in order to intimidate political opposition. Harsh prison sentences have been issued against a number of activists, and government officials increasingly threaten to execute protestors. Particularly at risk are activists belonging to ethnic and religious minorities. In response to this grave situation and in view of Canada's leadership role in adoption of UN human rights resolutions on Iran, we urge the government of Canada to insist on our following demands at the UPR session: • The immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners • An end to state-sponsored violence; accountability for crimes committed and no recourse to the death penalty • Freedom of assembly and association, and freedom of expression and the press And finally: • UN-initiated investigation to identify those responsible for massive human-rights abuses and to bring them before the International Criminal Court by a referral of the UN Security Council. At this crucial juncture, the fulfillment of the above demands provides the only principled and realistic way to advocate and protect the rights of Iranian civilians. Sincerely, --------------------------------
