LOS ANGLES,— On April 28th, 2012 Soraya Fallah received the “2012 Leadership and Human Rights” award from The Sheriff's Indo-American Council at the 4th Annual Sheriff's Show, Honoring Men & Women in Uniform, Community & Business Leaders.
Soraya dedicated this award to her fellow activists around the world, especially those currently facing imprisonment and torture in Kurdistan and Iran. During her brief but eloquent speech, Soraya reminded her audience of people whose basic human rights are trampled on. She spoke passionately about not being able to forget those whose voices have been silenced. She also thanked members of the Iranian and Kurdish community, as well as the members of the many organizations she works with who came to the event to celebrate with her. Soraya thanked the organizing committee for the recognition. She mentioned Kurdish community of Southern California, Iranian community, members of Supporter of Mothers of Laleh Park, the US Committee for UN Women-Greater LA, UNAUSA-SV Chapter board members.
The Honorable Sheriff Leroy D. Baca personally handed Soraya her award.
After her speech, she was greeted on stage by her son, Zaniar Moradian, and the representative of the Kurdish Community of Southern California and received a large bouquet of beautiful flowers as a token of gratitude for her leadership in the community.
The Sheriff's Indo-American Council have held this event for the past four years to honor community leaders, service members, celebrated individuals in entertainment, media, and the arts. This year’s event coincided with the Indian New Year, which made for a lively celebration of traditional Indian dance, music, and fashion. The prestigious event was organized by Maria Amor, president of We Care For The World Organization. Along with her colleague Kevin Kaul, Ms. Amor put together an impressive ceremony held at the Los Angeles Convention Center. More than 200 distinguished guests and notable community leaders attended this event, including The Honorable Sheriff Leroy D. Baca and LA City Council members. Thirteen companies and organizations partnered together to sponsor the night. The room was also packed with members of the press covering the event for various news outlets,www.ekurd.netshows, and websites. All proceeds from the event were collected for charitable causes such as an endowment for the families that have lost service members over the past 10 years.
After Soraya received her award, she was interviewed on the red carpet by several Radio and TV channels. Soraya took the opportunity to bring up the issue of human rights and asked members of the Los Angeles community to participate in civil and community services. She specifically urged the international community to work to end human rights violations in Iran. Soraya mentioned that she will continue to work towards ending violence against women, ethnic, and national minorities, specifically for the rights of the Kurdish people. She also thanked her husband of twenty-five years, her son and daughter for their unconditional support in her activism and humanitarian works.
The event committee commissioned the celebrated Armenian artist Mkrtich Sarkisyan and Edgar Harutyunyan to create a one of a kind sculpture to be handed to the recipients as their awards.
Sorays’s dress for the evening was designed by Shakar Rahat who is a well known fashion designer and the recipient of the 2012 Fashion Couturier of the Year Award at the same event. Soraya glowed in a long turquoise color dress and her stunning beauty was even more vibrant.
Guests were able to enjoy two fashion shows, art gallery, entertainment, food, red carpet and much more.
VOKRadio, Kurdish feminist Tribune, Apadana TV, Porchooneh Radio, and Mike Doe the Photographer from Rita Photos were the media outlets present to cover Soraya’s award ceremony. She also enjoyed presence of the Kurdish film producer, director, and writer Mr. Jano Rosbiani and Individual members of Olympus Community Based Health Center where she works as a social worker and supervisor.

Whenever someone hears Soraya Fallah’s life story, they are struck by her compassion and deep commitment to the betterment of the world. Soraya’s life story sounds more like a script to a Hollywood film, embellished with tragedies and triumphs. But the reality of her selfless dedication to human rights is more awe-inspiring than any dramatized fiction. Soraya, quite literally, began her activism in childhood and has not rested ever since.
